Their reasons
Why do IPSC members compete?
A match is about more than hitting targets. Every competitor comes for something different, and the sport has room for all of it.
-
They see their progress
Each match shows exactly where you stand: handling, shooting, movement. You leave knowing what to work on next.
-
They have someone to measure up against
The timer and the score do not negotiate. You compete with the others, but above all with your own last result.
-
They solve problems against the clock
A stage is a puzzle with several answers: where to shoot from, in what order, when to reload. You make a plan and carry it out.
-
They never get bored
Stages change from one match to the next, so there is always a challenge you have not met before.
-
They grow beyond the range
Focus, discipline and calm under pressure are trained on the stage, and they are useful everywhere else.
-
They make friends
Between stages you meet people who share the passion, swap advice and stay in touch long after the match.
One sport.
Three principles.
IPSC was founded in 1976 at the Columbia Conference in Missouri by a group of enthusiasts led by Colonel Jeff Cooper. The goal was clear: to turn shooting into a complete sport that weighs the three essential elements of practical shooting equally.
Neither the fastest nor the most accurate shooter wins on their own. The winner is the one who balances accuracy, power and speed under the pressure of the timer and the rules.

Accuracy
“Speed is fine, but accuracy is final.” (Jeff Cooper)
-
Vis
Power
Power is an element that must be recognised and rewarded. Loads that make Major score better on the outer zones (5, 4 and 2 points against 5, 3 and 1 for Minor).
-
Celeritas
Speed
The timer starts at the beep and stops at the last shot. Your time divides the points you scored and sets your Hit Factor.
The IPSC formula
Hit factor: the system that unites accuracy, speed and power.
The points scored are divided by the stage time. The highest hit factor wins the stage.
115 points ÷ 25.00 seconds = 4.60 hit factor
Choose your discipline.
Every discipline uses the same scoring principles and the same safety rules. What changes is the firearm, the distances and the equipment divisions.
